Event to celebrate United Nations Day in Armagh
United Nations Day is celebrated annually throughout the world on 24 October. In advance of this year’s anniversary, Councillor Julie Flaherty, the Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council hosted a seminar and reception for the United Nations Association Northern Ireland (UNA-NI), at the Palace Demesne Armagh.
Amongst those attending were Consulate General of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in N.Ireland, Dr Christopher Stange; Vice Consul for China, Mrs Xie Li; Honorary Consul for Poland, Jerome Mullen and Dr Carl Wright Trustee representing UNA-UK.
Pupils from nine schools in the Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon area, UNA-NI members,and representatives from other organisations, also attended. In her welcome, the Lord Mayor expressed her delight to see so many young people and guests representing different countries and organisations on Council premises.
The first of the two guest speakers, Captain Tom Fitzpatrick of the UN Training School Ireland and a native of Armagh, spoke of what it means to be a peacekeeper and shared his experiences in serving abroad as part of the UN Peacekeeping Force, which celebrates its 70th anniversary this year.
He was followed by Kevin Hyland OBE,former UK Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner and currently Chief Executive Officer of ChildFund Ireland,an organisation whose worldwide work includes promoting children’s rights and campaigning for policies that prevent the trafficking of children and child labour. He also emphasised the importance of raising awareness of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals in our everyday lives.

Dr Marion Gibson is recognised and renowned worldwide for her work in psychological trauma management, dedicating her entire career to
caring for people in crisis. She has spent time in the US, helping Vietnam war victims suffering from post-traumatic stress, also in Thailand after the 2004 Tsunami as a British Red Cross volunteer and one of the founders of the British Red Cross Psychosocial Support Team who support the Foreign and Commonwealth crisis response. She is the recipient of numerous awards including the International Critical Stress Foundation (USA) Award for ‘Excellence and Innovation in the field of Trauma response’ in 2009
