On 10 March 2012, over 200 students from schools across the UK, gathered at the headquarters of the International Maritime Organisation in London for UNA-UK’s inaugural Model UN schools tournament: Uniting the Nations.
The students represented country ambassadors and discussed how the ideals of the Olympic Truce could be used to build a safer, fairer and more sustainable world for us all. Students from two local schools, Methodist College, Belfast and the Royal School, Armagh, took part in the Model UN and UNA-NI was proud to learn that the students made a notable contribution to the debate in their ‘UN Security Council committees’ and received three awards.
UNA-NI’s Chairperson attended the MUN and has been quoted by UNA-UK as follows: “I was thrilled to see Generation United Nations engage young people from Northern Ireland in a national model UN tournament. It’s given them an interest and enthusiasm for international affairs that will motivate them for years to come.”
