There have been several local branches in Northern Ireland over the years and it is hoped to use the website to seek details of past activities, which were held locally to promote the international work of the UN. Examples of past events include:
The new Millennium saw a re-structuring of UNA locally as a region which is now called the United Nations Association for Northern Ireland. The region had been represented on the Board of Directors of UNA-UK, with one Director’s place, filled by Patricia Irvine. Re-structuring of the UK Board in 2017 has led to two places being allocated for all the regions throughout the UK.
- UNA Belfast Branch, which held its first meeting on 13 November 1945 in the Lombard Café, Belfast;
- UNA Belfast Branch held an exhibition about the UN in the offices of the Belfast Telegraph. Terence O’Neill, the Prime Minister of Northern Ireland was invited to open the exhibition;
- UNA Belfast Branch presented the Belfast City Hall with a UN flag, and with a request that it would be flown every 24 October to mark the anniversary of the UN;
- To mark the 25th anniversary in 1970 of the founding of the United Nations, a tree-planting ceremony was held in Tannaghmore Gardens in the new city of Craigavon. A metal sculpture was commissioned and unveiled by the then Governor of Northern Ireland, Lord Wakehurst. Representatives of the community, accompanied by local school pupils, planted 25 oak trees. It was a cross community effort with representatives of church and state present.
